How a Small Local Orchestra Took the Hit for the Art, and What That Says About Art

In a recent story from a large western city that will go unnamed, the city orchestra almost shut down. One of the orchestral leaders was funneling money from the business. Furthermore, ticket sales slumped and the orchestra was on the verge of total bankruptcy. It was one of those classic stories that most artists have experienced directly or heard through the grapevine. The story unfolds to shed some light on local arts.

New Leadership and Turning the Tide

The orchestra obtained new leadership in the form of a former Disney executive. The leader gave the group an ultimatum. If the orchestra was to continue at all, the players would have to play for free. They did.

For a period of about 18 months, the orchestra played shows for free with a contracted volunteer status. The Disney executive promoted new shows and projected greater numbers with higher ticket sales.

Supporting the Arts

The local community did support the arts by coming out to the shows. They supported the shows and the players, but it was the players who took the financial hit. When it came time to severely cut the budget, the answer was to short the players by paying them nothing.

It worked, but at what cost? Was the best answer to cut artistic payouts when it was the players keeping the show alive in the first place? Perhaps this story sheds some light on the place of art when the money is tight.

Sacramento Arts seeks to deliver a thriving community of arts in the city. This should never happen. Finances and arts are commonly tied by necessity but not at the cost of one over the other. The group of Sacramento Likes stresses the changes of the arts in the modern world. How can the arts thrive? How can artists avoid situations like the above?

Perhaps most importantly, how can financiers and leaders shift the blame and the narrative to focus on arts as the most insightful and valuable component tying it all together? A discussion should take place that prioritizes art where it needs to be, and Sacramento is proud to lead the conversation in this direction.
